Candy Acres Labradors

About Me:

I am Gayle Abrams, owner of Candy Acres Labradors. I have owned Labrador Retrievers all of my life, in one form or another, mixed breeds as a child, and pure bred Labs as an adult. I bred Shetland Sheepdogs for a number of years as a young adult, but always owned a Lab that went on trail rides with me and my horses, and I developed a deep respect and love for this wonderful breed.

Nine years ago I bought a four month old black lab puppy from a breeder in Dighton MA, and from that humble beginning Candy Acres Labradors came into being. Candy Acres Mighty Sampson, Sam to all of his friends, was originally purchased as a companion dog. My vet told me, "this dog should be in the show ring, he is beautiful". I had never shown a dog before, and had no idea how to begin, but begin I did, with handling lessons first, then obedience lessons once I had attended a few shows and was drawn to those rings.

Sam never finished his Championship, and never earned a single leg in obedience but he introduced me to the joys of training dogs. We made a lot of mistakes together, and I learned more with each dog that I trained. My first obedience dog was Sam's daughter, Candy Acres Chocolate Chip Muffin CD, and I was on my way to becoming a true obedience competitor. I have put Compaion Dog (CD) titles on a few of my dogs, and now absolutely LOVE the new rally obedience. My black girl Molly has her Rally Advanced Excellent (RAE) title, she was my first rally dog and helped me to learn how to really enjoy working a dog in this new and exciting sport. My show boy Brutus, Candy Acres Brute Force RE, will go into competition obedience training this fall and will hopefully advance through his Utility Dog (UD) title in the future. I plan on keeping one puppy from each of my current litters and competing with each of them in breed, obedience and rally as they come of age and advance in their training. I already have them signed up for competition puppy classes at my training school!
